JULIE A. DANIELS

SEA ART

Julie Ann Daniels is an artist and designer living and working in Falmouth, Cornwall.

Since completing a BA (Hons) DESIGN (Textiles) in 1994, she has spent her time creating designs for fabrics, wallpapers and surface decoration for use in the fashion and home textile industry.

Her hand painted design work is sold through a design studio in Switzerland to leading high end contemporary design houses and manufacturers in Europe and the U.S. and also having had the pleasure to create a special collection for CIRQUE DU SOLEIL.

She continues to create beautiful, contemporary designs for her collection.

SEA ART

The stunning Cornish coastline and it's breathtaking beaches are an endless source of inspiration.

By using her own personally developed mixed media technique, Julie has a unique textural style which captures the movement of water.

The paintings reflect her love of Cornwall, the sea, and the incredible power and beauty of waves.

"My introduction to the world of commercial design began whilst in my final year studying for my degree. The INDIGO trade fair held in Paris would be the first place our work, as students, would be shown and possibly sold. My first sale. A loose softly painted shining sun with a line from a William Blake poem "The sun does arise and make happy the skies..." Bought by a Parisian manufacturer, it was to be printed onto swimwear. It felt good. And again that summer I sold to OSBORNE AND LITTLE at the NEW DESIGNERS trade fair, Islington, London. It gave me the confidence I needed as a graduate. Immediately I began working for NEW YORK TEXTILES INC on a freelance basis.

In 1996 I  began a working relationship with a design studio in Switzerland and twenty five years later it continues.

I don't receive recognition for my design work, nor is it something I need. The knowledge that each manufactured piece is enjoyed is enough. There is something very special about creating something that becomes part of someone's world."

"The sea paintings were originally for my pleasure alone. I found that the techniques I had developed whilst creating my designs allowed me to capture the movement of the sea on to canvas. I find beauty within contrasts which work in harmony. I express this when painting the solid colour of a headland against the layered texure and colours of the water and the perspective of a sky. The painting comes to life and shows a certain realism by acknowleging the movement of the clouds and water.

Although the sea circles are abstract, it is equally as important for me to capture the same feeling as when looking out to sea. The circular form brings the feeling of motion when viewed, the rhythm and ebb and flow of the waves.

I am currently expanding the geometric semi abstract LIFEBUOY series and developing and increasing the scale of the WHITE LINES artwork. I am still creating series of designs for my design collection when I feel inspired to do so, however, I intend to remain focused on my sea paintings, I feel this is where my future as an artist lies"
